Glass Recycling

Glass of all kinds and colors can now be accepted by WRG but ONLY at the designated containerlocated at the South Entrance to our facility at 3305 West H Street, Ogallala.

What Is Glass Recycling?

Glass recycling is the process of collecting used glass containers, cleaning and crushing them, and melting them down to make new glass products. Unlike many other materials, glass can be recycled endlessly without losing quality or purity.

πŸ” What Recycled Glass Becomes

Recycled glass, known as cullet, is used to make:

  • New bottles and jars (most common use)

  • Fiberglass insulation

  • Reflective materials for road paint

  • Countertops and tiles (in green building materials)

  • Sandblasting material

Up to 95% of new glass in bottles and jars can be made from recycled glass!

🌍 Environmental Impact of Recycling Glass

βœ… 1. Saves Natural Resources

  • Reduces need for raw materials like sand, soda ash, and limestone.

  • 1 ton of recycled glass saves 1.2 tons of raw materials.

βœ… 2. Saves Energy

  • Melting recycled glass requires about 30% less energy than making new glass from raw materials.

  • Every 10% of cullet in a new glass batch reduces energy use by 2–3%.

βœ… 3. Reduces Emissions

  • Lower energy use = less carbon dioxide (COβ‚‚) emissions.

  • Reduces mining and transportation pollution.

βœ… 4. Reduces Landfill Waste

  • Glass takes thousands of years to decompose in landfills.

  • Recycling keeps it in use and out of landfills.

βœ… 5. Supports a Circular Economy

  • Recycled glass goes straight back into the production loop.

  • Creates jobs and reduces manufacturing costs.

♻️ How to Recycle Glass Properly

  • Rinse containers to remove food residue.

  • Remove lids and caps (they’re often made from metal or plastic).

Recycling a single glass bottle saves enough energy to power a 100-watt light bulb for 4 hours!
