Disposing of Household Hazardous Waste the Right Way

Many common household products — like paints, stains, cleaners, and other chemicals — can become dangerous when not handled or disposed of properly. These items are considered household hazardous waste (HHW), and they require special disposal to protect our health, water, and environment.

What Counts as Household Hazardous Waste?

Household hazardous waste includes many products you might find in your garage, shed, or under the kitchen sink. We accept all household hazardous waste, including:

  • Fertilizer

  • Paint

  • Pesticides

  • Weed control chemicals

  • Oil and automotive fluids

  • Household cleaners and chemicals

  • Car maintenance chemicals

  • And more

If it’s flammable, corrosive, toxic, or reactive — or if you’re simply unsure — it likely qualifies as hazardous waste. And we can take it.

💲 Disposal Fee: $2.50 per pound
This fee covers the cost for WRG to dispose of these items responsibly and legally through Clean Harbors, our certified hazardous waste management partner. Clean Harbors ensures these materials are treated or recycled in ways that minimize environmental impact — keeping our land, air, and water safe. These items are only accepted at our facility during business hours.

🚫 Why Proper Disposal Matters:
It is illegal to dump hazardous products down the drain, on the ground, or into the trash. Landfills cannot accept these materials because they can leak into the soil and groundwater, causing long-term harm to both people and wildlife.

Improperly disposing of hazardous waste can have serious consequences. These chemicals cannot go to the landfill and should never be placed in your regular trash bin. When disposed of incorrectly, they can:

  • Contaminate groundwater, which is our community’s primary source of drinking water

  • Release harmful toxins into the soil and environment

  • Create health hazards for families, pets, wildlife, and sanitation workers

  • Cause fires, chemical reactions, or spills during transport or handling

Choosing the right disposal method isn’t just environmentally responsible — it protects the long-term health and safety of our entire community.

By bringing your household hazardous waste to WRG, you’re helping protect our environment and community while ensuring your home stays safe and clutter-free.
